7/05/00: The Solo RP, and why it's your friend
by Jenn U.

Okay. So let's say you're in the midst of OOC day at your favorite hide out in IMC. You are also in the midst of that gut-tickling moment which comes before the light bulb comes on and Ta-DA...inspiration strikes. Ah...inspiration. This is the sort of thing which makes the handle sysops run in fear, I'd imagine. This means they get e-mails from people who are just going "I MUST HAVE THIS HANDLE OR MY WORLD WILL CEASE TO BE!" at their computers. I, gentle reader, am one such person. Okay, well I'm not as bad as I used to be. But every now and again... (And yes, someone is snickering. I can hear it.) Moments like this are however how I learned the value of the solo. Why? Let me explain.

When I started on WBS I was one of the people who posted very basic ideas. My character drank more tea than the entire country of England in ten years. She sat and pondered a great deal and she spoke not much at all. Why? This would be because I had not a clue what this C was about. Hence, I learned a valuable lesson from the regulars all around me. I learned the value of the solo. What the solo is is an excuse to be really involved in just YOUR character. What are they like, what makes them laugh, what makes them cry. A solo lets you hop into their head and snoop around. Which, to really -like- the C, is what you want right? To be able to slip inside their skin and just BE them! You wind up knowing a LOT about how your character is, and you can tweak them into a place you want them. But there's more.

More? She's got MORE? Oh Lord help us all. Yes...more.

What more is that people who are in mun mode often do read IC posts. And yes, this is a good way of saying "Hey, you don't know me but this is how -I- play". An unspoken invitation to learn about YOU better. Maybe you'll get a PM or an AIM/ICQ message saying "Nice posts." "Could we play sometime?" Posts which mean more IC time for YOU! Which is what we all want right? MORE GAME TIME! (*evil laughter...cough...blush..grin*)

So, anyway, when you see someone posting solo, do read. Its a great way to meet people and maybe get more game. And for those who don't solo much, take it from a solo-player, its worth the time. The people in your C closet (Yes, those beady-eyed people do have to live SOMEWHERE ya know!) will thank you for it.

In short, Jenn U. likes it when people watch her play with herself...
