Everyday Things in Premodern Japan
List price: See item detail.

"The book provides . . . a wealth of ideas and information. . . . For those of us who are fascinated to discover how houses were built, clothes washed and mended, food prepared, or "night soil" disposed of, she has written a book that is hard to put down." Penelope Francis, Economic History Review

Gohatto (Taboo)
List price: See item detail.

Gorgeous and fascinating film that details one of the more controversial aspects of the samurai: homosexual liaisons. The film is set in 1865, not the 1600s that the game is set in, but enough of the details are the same between the two periods that it still comes highly recommended. Great kendo choreography and cinematography, too.

Gojoe (REGION 1 US/CANADA DVD)
List price: See item detail.

This is THE DVD Bushido-ites have been waiting for! An extravagant adventure fantasy in the samurai tradition, GOJOE: THE SPIRIT WAR CHRONICLE (aka GOJOE: REISENKI) is a special effects-filled joyride with that increasingly anomalous trait: a thoughtful story. Benkei is a former warrior who has become a Buddhist monk, but when the GoJoe Bridge turns into the scene of a massacre, with an unknown force beheading countless Heike soldiers, he receives the call to fight via a Sanskrit inscription that appears on his chest. He joins forces with an unlikely ally, Testukichi, a sword scavenger who robs corpses and has no use for Benkei's Buddhist tendencies. The two discover that their opponent is not a demon fulfilling a famous prophecy, as rumor would have it, but a fallen prince determined to reclaim his power. After the prince murders Benkei's superior monk, Benkei finds the strength to overcome his misgivings regarding violence and vanquish the enemy that menaces the GoJoe Bridge. Starring Tadanobu Asano (Ichi the Killer, Zatoichi 2003), Daisuke Ryu (Ran, Bayside Shakedown) and Masatoshi Nagase (Pistol Opera, Suicide Club, The Most Terrible Time In My Life).
