Supernaturals and Other Supernaturals
|

Japan's mythology contains a great many creatures and entities of supernatural origin, some of which may be encountered during gameplay as monsters, adversaries, or even potential allies.

The first thing you should keep in mind when playing supernaturals is that they are relatively rare.  To that end, the room staff will be limiting the total number of supernaturals of any one kind to a maximum of three at any one time.  So only three oni, three kappa, three yuki-onna, etc. will be allowed as active characters in the roster at any given time.  You cannot play a supernatural character unless you have had at least three months' playtime with an approved character of a more conventional variety.

Also, most of these creatures avoid contact with humans and will not show themselves to people except in rare circumstances, although some of them (where marked with a *) can disguise themselves as ordinary people.  Because of this, it makes them hard to play with the other characters, and let's face it, character interaction is what makes the world go 'round.  A "half-" character would be easier to play -- one foot in either world, now that's a source of drama! -- but again, I'd only recommend it if you can do a really good job with it.

If you do create a supernatural character, you must observe the following point rules.

  • Supernaturals get the same breakdown of points as everyone else.
  • If a supernatural character has special abilities, they are to be taken as skills -- although they are basically spiritual skills, so one would roll Ki + the skill in question.
  • The total number of points spent on these special abilities cannot exceed one's Ki X 3.  These points spent come out of your starting skill total of 45.  Note also that you cannot add to these skills in the future without raising your Ki first!

The following list of supernaturals will be expanded upon greatly over time.  As we add a full page for each type, the name will be hotlinked.  Other types may be added in the future as well.

  • Baku - A creature that is supposed to eat nightmares.  We have 2 slots open.
  • Kappa -- A malevolent turtle/froglike creature that generally lives underwater and will often torment those who disturb its peace, or demand a toll for passing over a bridge (usually in the form of wild cucumbers, which kappas adore).  Kappas have an indentation in the top of their head, which holds water.  If you knock the water out of the dent, they die quickly.  We have three slots open.
  • *Kitsune (Fox) -- A shapeshifter animal, considered to be bad luck, and generally mischevious and devious.  Shrines also exist to foxes, who are supplicated to offset future trouble and are considered messengers of the god Inari. The older and wiser a kitsune gets, the more tails they have, and when they hit 1,000 years, they have nine and are considered sages.  We are not accepting applications for them at this time as we have reached the room limit of three characters.
  • Oni -- The Japanese demon or ogre -- tall and muscular with fangs, claws, and horns.  Most oni are troublemakers, but there is the occasional kind one.  We have three slots left for oni.
  • *Tanuki (Raccoons) -- Another shapeshifter animal, who uses leaves to accomplish this.  Tanuki are kind and helpful to humans in general.  Many shrines exist to tanuki, who are considered to be good luck omens.  We have three slots open for tanuki.
  • Tengu -- Consisting of the long-nosed "goblin" tengu and the crow-like karasu-tengu, they are two radically different kinds of creature.  One seeks to destroy humanity; the other to teach it a stern lesson or three.  We have three slots open for tengu.
  • Yama-inu (Mountain dogs) -- The brutal yama-inu run in packs and defend their territory savagely against both human and supernatural incursion.  They also form alliances, however tentatively, with certain humans.  The giant wolves from the film Mononoke-hime are a good reference point.  We have two slots open for yama-inu.
  • *Yuki-onna -- A curious Japanese ghost of sorts, which usually appears as a lovely woman dressed in white during snowstorms, and kills men with extreme cold (something like the personification of hypothermia!)  According to one legend, they can appear as a normal human, but there appears to be a vampiric need for them to feed off of the life force of others occasionally (by freezing them to death).  We have two slots open for yuki-onna.
  • Kuei -- the restless spirits of the undead, who roam the earth looking to finish the work they left undone, be it revenge or something more benign.

Please do not apply for a supernatural character (or any capped C) unless you have already had at least one other non-supernatural character in consistent play for at least one census period.

Supernaturals and Other Supernaturals

Supernaturals have a kind of "sixth sense" for one another.  If two of the same kind meet, they can figure out that the other is a supernatural of the same by rolling Ki + Intelligence, with a target number of 5.  (They get the automatic 5 since they're the same type.)  If they are of different types, the target number is 6 or higher.

Magic-users can do the same with each other (and supernaturals with magic-users, etc.).  One of the additional pieces of information gleaned if the person being "scoped out" is a magic-user is what deity, if any, they gain their powers from.

[There will be some more material to come about the relationships of each of the supernaturals with each other.]

For more information on how supernaturals deal with mahou or magic-using humans, see Magic.
